How will NICNAS assessment of new UV filters differ from assessment by the TGA?

Current health and safety standards (i.e. data requirements and assessment methodology) applied to new UV filters under medicines regulation will be maintained by NICNAS. A change to the NICNAS Schedule of Data Requirements is proposed to align data requirements for UV filters to be used in cosmetics with the requirements under the Therapeutic Goods Act 1989. Other NICNAS data requirements , i.e. environmental and physicochemical properties remain unchanged and as per the NICNAS Handbook for Notifiers. Until the Schedule of Data Requirements is amended, transitional arrangements are in place. (See notice in the Chemical Gazette of January 2007, accessible at http://www.nicnas.gov.au/Publications/Chemical_Gazette.asp ).

Anyone planning to introduce a new UV Filter into Australia should contact the NICNAS Notification and Assessment team for up to date information on current requirements.
