What is a Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS)?

MSDS provide information to allow for the safe handling of substances used at work. In Australia, under the National Model Regulations for the Control of Workplace Hazardous Substances produced by the National Occupational Health and Safety Commission, and adopted under state and territory legislation, manufacturers and importers of any chemical that is a hazardous substance are obliged to produce a MSDS for the substance, and to make it freely available to employees handling the substance.

The MSDS is a document that describes the properties and uses of a substance and provides health hazard information and information on precautions for use and safe handling.
