Registration FAQs

How has company registration changed?

Company registration is now called NICNAS Registration, and from 1 September 2004 applies to all who import and/or manufacture industrial chemicals for commercial purposes. In the past only individuals or companies who imported and/or manufactured a total value of $500,000 or more of industrial chemicals were required to register.

There were only two levels of registration: the lower level (total value of chemicals $500,000-$4,999,999) and upper level (total value > $5,000,000). A new registration level has now been introduced, known as Tier 1. Tier 1 applies to anyone introducing industrial chemicals of a total value of $1-$499,999. The thresholds for lower and upper levels remain the same, however levels have been renamed (lower level = Tier 2; upper level = Tier 3). The registration year still runs from 1 September to 31 August in the following year.
