Registration FAQs

I use imported chemicals, but buy them from an Australian supplier. Should I include the value of these imports for NICNAS Registration?

It depends on who is considered to be the importer of these chemicals. You are not responsible for NICNAS Registration for the chemicals imported by someone else. However, you are responsible for any chemicals imported by yourself, regardless of whether you deal directly with the supplier overseas or through an agent/distributor in Australia for the sale of these chemicals.

There have been some instances in which clients tell us that their chemicals are obtained through local sale (eg, orders are placed locally) and that they should not be responsible for NICNAS Registration for these chemicals. Often, when we examine these cases more carefully, we find that for commercial reasons, the clients have nominated themselves as the importer on customs entries.
