Cosmetics Review

NICNAS and the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) jointly engaged an independent consultant to undertake a "Review of the regulation of products at the interface between cosmetics and therapeutic goods". Preliminary comment was sought through an open letter to stakeholders published on the NICNAS and TGA websites in May 2004.

The outcome of the review is now released as a draft discussion paper and will be open for a period of comment, prior to finalisation of the report.

Comment can be submitted to cosmetic_review@nicnas.gov.au  Due to requests from stakeholders, the 5 May 2005 deadline for making a submission in regards to the "Review of the regulation of products at the interface between cosmetics and therapeutic goods" has been extended by 2 weeks. Comments close Friday 20 May 2005.

Initial considerations will focus on the Trans-Tasman regulatory position for therapeutic products subject to review, under the Trans-Tasman Agency. Once the Trans-Tasman position is determined for each of the product categories included in the report, those products recommended for regulation as cosmetics will be considered.

NICNAS will utilise exiting consultative mechanisms to conduct information sessions for the cosmetics industry and the community. These information sessions will cover products proposed for regulation as cosmetics and will be held after closure of the public comment period on 20 May 2005.
