AICS Search Tool

Chemicals whose listing has changed: NICNAS is making changes to the AICS to improve the accuracy of listing. Currently, this involves:

  • Inclusion of updated CAS names and Numbers for 245 chemicals resulting from the most recent CAS audit of chemicals on the public AICS;
  • Removal of certain substances ineligible for listing (individual ions which are not chemicals; and alloys, which are mixtures)
  • Inclusion of the particulars of alloys in a separate section attached to the AICS records of the individual components.

To improve the likelihood of an accurate search by CAS Number an automatic check of the final digit (the check digit) is now incorporated into the CAS Search function. The chance of an error in any of the digits making up the CAS Number is therefore minimised.

For more information on these changes, see the AICS Search Guidance.

Contains all words: The search will be conducted on all words entered on the line. The sequence or any preceding characters are ignored. This is the best option if a chemical name is long and has many components (eg polymers)

Contains any words: This will search for any word entered on the line. This option should be used in combination with other options as it may lead to an excessive number of matches.

Contains phrase: This will search for any phrase entered. The sequence of phrase items is maintained during the search. This option needs to be used with caution as it may result in negative result if the sequence on AICS does not match the search phrase.

Starts with: This will search for any chemical name starting with the name entered. Here wild card options are useful.

Equals: This search matches the exact chemical name. This option is useful when searching for individual chemical names (eg benzene, water etc)

Excludes phrase: This option will exclude any phrase/word entered. This is useful to narrow down search results.

Any combination of the above options can be used to do the search.
