An important aspect to good regulation is the ongoing periodic examination of regulatory processes and practices to assess their effectiveness as well and identify opportunities for improving them. In doing this, an effective engagement with all stakeholders will ensure that the regulation remains fit for purpose and will promote acceptance of and compliance with the regulation. It is with this in mind that NICNAS undertook a review of the Existing Chemicals Assessment Program (EC Program) during 2005-06. While NICNAS has met and/or exceeded performance targets for the program, establishing a level of effectiveness and efficiency, the Review offers opportunities to enhance performance and effectiveness by increasing the ability of the regulator to deal with scientific advances, technological developments, emerging issues internationally and the growing demand for chemical safety information by the community. The final report and recommendations from the Review Steering Committee (RSC) are expected by September 2006.
