NICNAS participated in efforts to reform the nation-wide environmental management of chemicals through the National Framework for Chemicals Environmental Management (NChEM). NChEM an initiative of the EPHC Chemicals Working Group, endorsed by Environment Ministers on 2 June 2007 aims to improve the way environmental impacts of chemicals are managed in Australia. NICNAS provided input to roundtable discussions at meetings of interested stakeholders held 1-2 March and 22 May 2007. Subjects included: emerging and priority issues (in particular methods of identifying, screening, and prioritising chemicals of concern); information needs related to NChEM; and proposed options for linking NICNAS recommendations in chemical assessment reports to state and territory environmental protection management controls for industrial chemicals.
