There was considerable public attention paid during the year to the widely used chemical, formaldehyde.

A NICNAS priority existing chemical assessment (its highest level of analysis) of formaldehyde completed in the previous reporting year provided a scientifically sound basis for consequent regulatory and advisory activities. These included a submission to the National Drugs and Poisons

Schedule Committee recommending measures to protect health, advice on the health risk from use in textiles and temporary accommodation and generation of a series of five safety information sheets for workers in industries using it and for the general public.

These addressed safe use of formaldehyde in embalming, in laboratories, and in the general workplace, mobile and demountable housing and in textiles.
